The Western Hemisphere c1630-1634 Amsterdam Dutch edition by Henricus Hondius based on his brother's Jodocus 1606 map which is certified and updated, producing a dominant image of the new world for Europeans in the first half of the 17th century. Among the many interesting features are: nice details naming the California locations, no Great Lakes shown, oversized and misshaped North America, Rio Grande flows into the gulf of California, the famous seven cities of Cibola appear on the banks of a large imaginary lake, the east coast is misshaped but many settlements are named. South America is oversized with a large inlet sea. A group of cannibals are shown as well, in addition two shipwreck cartouches show the polar regions, the northern region is based on the theory of Fobisher view of a northwest passage
The southern polar region shows the long held belief of a mystical southern continent script on verse.
